Managing an ongoing illness

whilst at work

If you have an ongoing mental health problem, it is likely that you have developed coping strategies. These may include being aware of the warning signs for a relapse and taking pre-emptive action. For example:
  • no overtime, reduce social events that affect the likelihood of a relapse
  • being careful about drinking alcohol
  • taking exercise, and
  • finding time to relax.

It may be helpful to talk to your manager about this strategy and to ask for support if you spot early signs of a relapse.

Advance statements

Some people find it useful to draw up an ‘advance statement’ which explains how they wish to be treated if they become unwell. The statement can cover practical arrangements as well as treatment preferences, including details of the people who should be contacted or provided with information.
